IVEX and Ericsson have joined forces to advance the concept of Dynamic Operational Design Domain (ODD) within the DynoSAFE project, an initiative designed to integrate network performance measurement into the ODD of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This collaboration is focused on enhancing the safety and reliability of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) by pioneering new methods of recording, analyzing, and correlating network performance measurements with vehicle sensor data to adapt the automated capabilities.
Bridging network performance with sensor data
A key innovation of this partnership is its emphasis on the seamless integration of network connectivity data alongside traditional vehicle sensor information, such as video, radar, or LiDAR. IVEX and Ericsson have worked together to develop a robust system for collecting and processing network-quality data, making it as accessible and reliable as other sensor inputs.
This approach allows for a more comprehensive view of a vehicle’s operational environment, as the network quality data is correlated with sensor information to understand how fluctuations in connectivity can impact safety-critical automated functionalities under certain circumstances or scenarios.
Advanced Data Processing and Scenario Analysis
Through this collaboration, IVEX and Ericsson analyzed the correlation between network signals and vehicle sensor data to understand the dynamic ODD conditions for CAVs. This helps identify how network performance affects driving tasks and improves decision-making in autonomous systems, paving the way for improved decision-making in autonomous systems.
By assessing network quality, vehicles can adjust their behavior, for example avoid entering areas of weak network performance to not lose remote-supervision from an automated vehicle control center.
Pioneering the future of safer autonomous vehicles
By integrating connectivity (4G, 5G, etc.) monitoring technology into ADAS, Ericsson and IVEX aim to push the boundaries of vehicle safety. Ericsson’s Device Analytics (EDA) is a cloud-based measurement solution with machine learning foundations enabling network performance prediction to ensure quality of service. IVEX’s Data Analytics Platform is a cloud-based tool enhancing driving data analysis for testing, validating and homologating ADAS features, currently used for On-Road Evaluation by Euro NCAP.
The combination of both solutions creates a foundation for easily analyzing how vehicles interact seamlessly with connected infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance even in challenging environments. This collaboration is a step toward making autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles safer, more reliable, and more intelligent.
Looking ahead
As the automotive industry moves towards increasingly connected and autonomous solutions, the collaboration between IVEX and Ericsson represents a significant step toward safer, more intelligent CAVs. Together, we are committed to driving innovation in network-integrated vehicle safety to revolutionize how vehicles communicate, process data, and keep passengers safe on the road.
